“The Sacred Waterhole Dimirr Warlman”

Aboriginal artist Johnny Bulunbulun was born in the 1940s, in a remote part of northern Australia known as Arnhem Land.  The land and animals from where he grew up are very important in his work.  Bulunbulun created paintings on dried tree bark and painted in a traditional manner, using natural earth colours and brushes made form twigs and grass.  Bulunbulun's paintings reflect Aboriginal beliefs.  In the painting, The Sacred Waterhole Dimirr Warlman, animals are shown gathering to drink from the waterhole.  To Aboriginal peoples, the waterhole is sacred because it represents the source of life.
